in the situation room. they're working very hard to avoid the fiscal cliff. thanks so much for coming in. for so long, republicans wanted to extend the bush tax cuts forever, now for 98% of the american people, the democrats are saying, we're ready. we've given up, we'll let you have those bush tax cuts for as long as possible. let's just resolve that, we'll move on to some of the tougher issues later. let's make sure that 98% of the american families have these lower tax rates into next year. why not give that? >> the debate over those top two pshsz, is really a strong man debate. what we need is tax reform in america. we need a simpler less complicated tax code. >> i agree with you. we need a tax reform. why not resolve this one issue, make sure taxes don't increase for 98% of the americans, 100% of americans for their first $250,000 a year. let them have that, and then move on to tax reform and some of the other issues. >> i think it's important not to confuse a quick fix with a real fix. we could increase the top 2% their tax rates to 100% and it would cover 91 days worth of spending. it doe

the fiscal cliff or do you think that judging from your seeing what this meeting behind closed doors now and as time comes down to the end that they will come up with a deal at the 11th hour? >> well, look, there's always that possibility that you know, they could go over the fiscal cliff, but you're right in pointing out that this is how it usually plays out is that everyone voicing optimism at the start. then there's a lot of rhetoric that's thrown around. both sides getting sort of dug in positions and then you start to get sort of this air of compromise. what we're sensing now is that there does appear to be this willingness on both sides to compromise. you hear democrats talking about entitlements, willing to back down on entitlements, and then some republicans talking about you know, some kind of increase in taxes for wealthy americans and so, that really is a starting point where both sides have been digging in now for weeks and the hope is that this, there could be some real movement this week. get this wrapped up before the fiscal cliff scenario plays out. >> all right, dan loth

the fiscal cliff, we shouldn't do $4 trillion deal. wish to a $9 trillion deal and create the confidence in the world that we're going to manage our problems and we're going to downsize our government so we have a future. because the opposite of not downsizing, not making our choices, i don't everybody gets fired from congress, the opposite of that is at the other end of future. and the loss of freedom, the loss of independence. the morning shows today talked about our lack of power and effect in the middle east. why do you think we have lost effect and power in the middle is? because we have lost our economic might and we are losing the power and effect of our military might. and we won't have the money to continue to be a force for good in the world, because we will not live within our means. so the debt bomb is coming. the question is how do we defuse it? to maintain what we need to do to help the people that really need help in this country, but i should get together and work and solve the problem rather than play the political game. we are already playing a political game about the
